Rep. Jay Roberts Is Now House Transportation Chairman

Rep. Jay Roberts of House District 154, Ocilla, has been chosen by the House of Representatives to serve as chairman of the House Transportation committee.  He replaces Rep. Vance Smith who moved over to become Commissioner of the Georgia Department of Transportation.

Roberts, who is serving his third term in the House of Representatives, also serves as chairman of the Republican  Majority Caucus.   He holds a degree in Criminal Justice from Valdosta State University.  A community leader in Irwin County, Roberts and his wife, Sara, have two children, Justin and Jana.

Cancer Treatment Center Going to Newnan  Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA) announced today that it has selected Newnan, Ga., as the site of a proposed cancer treatment hospital that will serve patients in the Southeast and provide 500 new jobs in metro Atlanta.

"I'm excited that CTCA will now be closer to home," said Valerie Yurchuk, a cancer patient who treated at CTCA. "I could have gone to any cancer treatment program in the nation, but I came to CTCA because of its unique, patient-centered approach."

CTCA President and CEO Steve Bonner said the company chose Georgia as a gateway to better serve cancer patients throughout the Southeast.

"We are pleased to propose a new cancer treatment facility in the Southeast and thrilled to select Coweta County, one of the most sought-after destinations in metro Atlanta and Georgia," said Bonner. "Cancer patients living in the Southeast will have easier access to the high-quality, individualized, comprehensive care for which CTCA is known."

Vance Smith Headed for Transportation

State Rep. Vance Smith of Pine Mountain, a transportation leader in the Georgia General Assembly, is  the new  Commissioner of the Georgia Department of Transportation..  Smith, a member of the legislature for 12 years serves as chairman of the House Transportation Committee.  It has been suggested for weeks tha Smith was favored for the position by enough members of the Board to earn him the positiion.  One member of the board said on Wednesday that no surprises were expected at today's meeting.

 Smith is a graduate of Columbus State University and has spent thirty years in the construction and earth moving business.   His official bio on the state website says he hopes to expand the vision of transportation and infrastructure needs to not only the Metro Atlanta region, but to the rural home and all of Georgia.

Georgians will have reason to be proud of the DOT board for showing good judgement in picking someone of the great personality and special abilities as Vance Smith to head this major state department.
